Work Ready

On Tuesday 5th August Year 11 and 12 VCAL students (14 in total) from Yarram Secondary College participated in the Beacon ‘Work Readiness’ Program. The aim of this program was for students to learn how to better prepare themselves for the transition into the workforce. Students participated in activities around; workplace behaviour, employee interaction, how to handle feedback, first impressions, mock interviews, resume analysis/advice, teamwork and an understanding of the recruitment process.

Also present on the day were industry professionals from the local community including; Chris Barclay (HVP Plantations), Darren Rickard and Greg Simmer (Transfield Loy Yang, Maintenance Loy Yang), David Ward and Jason McFarlane (Apprentice Group Australia), Vanessa Leahy (Wellington Shire Council), Greg Peddle (Farming Business) and the Beacon staff. Students had an opportunity to liaise and discuss the work environment throughout the day with these community/beacon members, which was an invaluable experience for many of the students.

The day was a great success with students taking on board some valuable information that will better prepare them for their individual future career paths. Students also received a certificate that they can add to their portfolios for their efforts and dedication throughout the day. Careers Coordinator Jo Darvill should also be thanked for organising the day for the student.
