Yarram Secondary College is one of only six schools across Victoria lucky to be selected to participate in a ‘hands on’ science project with Questacon. The challenge is to design and build a model floating crane, able to lift items. The model must be a working model and developed from readily accessible items. The project will be conducted over six weeks and is delivered using the ‘Virtual Learning Equipment’ (Polycom). Our students will need to develop their ideas, be guided by the staff and Questacon and participate with the other five schools in discussion to eventually select the best design. All of this is conducted using the Virtual Learning equipment. Part of the aim of the project is to expose our students to resources that they cannot normally access and also develop their ability to use the Virtual Learning equipment. Hopefully, it also introduces our students to other budding scientists in other schools.
Seven of our Year Seven students have participated in the first introductory session where they used their innovation skills to solve a challenge that was presented to them. They worked in teams to produce a model from limited resources in a very short time span. What they came up with was excellent!!!!!
