China Study Tour

China study tour

During the last two weeks of Term 1 Miss Demaria and I were involved in a study tour to China. During the tour we were fortunate enough to stay in the cities of Shanghai, Suzhou, Changshu and Nanjing. We were part of a delegation of over 40 Teachers, Principals and Regional Office staff.

The main aims of the trip were as follows:

  • Establish a partner school relationship with a school in Changshu.
  • Develop or deepen our understanding of the Chinese education system.
  • Increase knowledge of contemporary Chinese culture in a variety of contexts, including home stay, site visits and school placements.
  • Strengthen professional networking amongst Victorian colleagues to support Asia literacy in schools.

While in Shanghai we were able to visit the East China Normal University where many Chinese Teachers do their training and return to for Professional Development. We were also able to visit a wide range of schools in several of the cities we stayed in during the tour. We also learnt about the structure of the Chinese Education system and the reforms they are currently undertaking to improve the education of their children. We learnt from the Changshu Bureau of Education that they are very interested in learning about how we teach students, develop teachers and manage schools in Australia.

The main aim of the tour was to begin a sister school relationship with a school in the city of Changshu. We are very excited to have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Changshu Foreign Language Middle School (CFLMS).

CFLMS has a student population of 2000! These students are all in years 7, 8 & 9. Up to 800 of these student stay at the school as boarders during the week and return home to their families on weekends. During our time in the school Miss Demaria and I were stayed with teachers and their families, which was an amazing cultural experience. At school we were able to visit many classes and each taught two lessons about Australian animals and what it is like living in this part of Australia.
